GRC jali for Chennai homes and buildings

A jali is a panel pierced with a repeating pattern. It does three jobs at once on a Chennai building: it breaks the afternoon sun into patches of light, keeps the evening sea breeze moving through, and screens the inside from the street.

GRC jali at a glance

Sizes
Made to your opening. Large screens are joined from panels sized for handling, with joints on solid parts of the pattern.
Depth
Set by the pattern and the span: deeper bars for larger panels and more shade.
Finishes
White or grey cement, integral colour, sandstone texture or exterior paint.
Fixing
Set into the opening, held in a frame, or fixed to the structure on concealed brackets.
Priced by
Square foot of screen.
To quote, send us
Opening sizes, a pattern reference (photo or drawing), the finish and the site location.

We cast jali in GRC, which holds the crisp edges of a carved stone screen at a fraction of the weight, so a full-height screen can hang on a facade or sit in a compound wall without heavy structure behind it.

Jali in Chennai and Tamil Nadu

  • West-facing walls take the hardest sun in Chennai. A jali set in front of a staircase, a balcony or a west window shades the wall while light and air still pass.
  • On close-set plots, a jali gives a balcony or a terrace privacy from the neighbouring building without closing it in.
  • Patterns can come from anywhere: a Mughal star lattice, a Chettinad motif, a screen on an old Madras building, or your architect's own geometry.

Jali styles we make

Four of the styles we cast most. Every one is made to your size, and the pattern or profile can be changed to your drawing.

  • Arched window jali

A star lattice in a cusped arch, for windows, staircase walls and mosque openings.

  • Star and cross

The classic Mughal jali: eight-point stars with cross-shaped openings. Even light and good privacy.

  • Octagon lattice

Large octagonal openings with small squares between. More open, so more breeze comes through.

  • Star rosette

Stars with a small rosette inside each. Richer detail for entrances and feature walls.

Design choices for jalis

Pattern
Mughal star lattices, geometric, floral, Chettinad or contemporary. We can also copy a jali you already have from a photo.
Openness
Bar width and depth are set for the light, privacy and airflow you want. A deeper jali shades more at the same openness.
Panel size
Panels are sized for your opening and joined into larger screens, with joints placed on solid parts of the pattern.
Finish
White or grey cement, integral colour, sandstone texture, or exterior paint to match the building.

How jalis are made and fixed

  1. Pattern and openness

We draw your pattern to scale and set the bar width and depth for the light, privacy and airflow you want.

  2. Panel layout

The screen is divided into panels, with joints placed on solid parts of the pattern so they don't show.

  3. Master and mould

A master is made for each panel type and a mould taken from it; repeat panels come from the same mould.

  4. Casting and hand finishing

Panels are cast with alkali-resistant glass fibre, cured, and every opening cleaned by hand to a sharp edge.

  5. Fixing and sealing

On site, panels are set into the opening or fixed on brackets, aligned, and the joints filled and sealed.

Questions about GRC jali

Can you make a jali in our own pattern?

Yes. Send a drawing, a CAD file or a clear photo of a jali you like. We redraw it as a production drawing for your approval and make the mould from it.

How is GRC jali priced in Chennai?

Per square foot of screen, depending on the pattern, thickness, finish, quantity and whether we install. WhatsApp us the size and a reference image for a quotation that includes delivery to your site.

Will a jali block the sea breeze?

No. The openness of the pattern is chosen for your wall. A more open pattern lets more air through; a deeper one shades more. We can suggest a pattern for the side of the house it faces.

Can a jali be used on a compound wall?

Yes. Jali panels set between pillars give a compound wall privacy without blocking air and light. The top is finished with a GRC coping that sheds rain.

Does a jali need cleaning?

Occasionally. Dust collects in the openings; a soft brush and water clean it. A sealed or painted finish makes this easier, especially near the sea.
