GRC arches

The cusped (multifoil) arch, the pointed arch and the round arch are the shapes of Madras's Indo-Saracenic buildings. Built in plaster on site, the curves of a row of arches rarely match. Cast in GRC, every arch comes out of the same mould.

Arches in Chennai and Tamil Nadu

  • Verandahs, entrance porches and compound gates in Chennai often use a row of arches; GRC keeps them identical.
  • Wedding halls and event venues use arches for entrances and stage backdrops.
  • Mosques and churches use pointed and cusped arches for doors, windows and prayer halls.

Arch styles we make

Four of the styles we cast most. Every one is made to your size, and the pattern or profile can be changed to your drawing.

  • Cusped arch

A many-lobed Indo-Saracenic arch on twin columns, with roundels in the spandrels.

  • Pointed arch

A two-centred arch for doors, windows and prayer halls.

  • Round arch with keystone

A semicircular arch with voussoirs and a keystone, for colonial and classical fronts.

  • Ogee arch

S-curves meeting at a point: a decorative arch for entrances and stage backdrops.

How arches are made and fixed

  1. Measure the openings

We take each opening's size; openings in a row often differ slightly, so each is measured.

  2. Drawing

The arch is drawn to the opening and divided into sections, with its mouldings and spandrel ornament.

  3. Moulds and casting

Section moulds are made, and every arch in a row comes from the same moulds so they match.

  4. Fixing

Sections are fixed to the beam and columns, aligned, and the joints filled and finished.

Questions about GRC arches

Is a GRC arch structural?

No. The opening is spanned by a beam or lintel; the GRC arch is the finished face fixed to it.

Can arches be made to fit existing openings?

Yes. We need the width, height and depth of each opening. For several openings, measure each one, as they often differ slightly.

Can you make arches for a wedding hall stage?

Yes. Stage arches and backdrops are cast in sections and can be finished in colour or gold.

Can arches be added to an existing verandah?

Usually. The arch faces fix to the existing beam and columns; we check the fixing points first.
