GRC capitals
The capital is where a column shows its style, and it is the part that suffers most when it is run in plaster on site. Cast in GRC, a capital keeps its leaves, volutes and petals sharp, and every capital in a row matches.

Capitals in Chennai and Tamil Nadu
- Older Madras buildings mix classical capitals with Indian lotus and bell forms. We can work in either tradition, or copy a capital you already have.
- Wedding halls and hotels often need dozens of identical capitals; casting from one mould keeps them the same.
Capital styles we make
Four of the styles we cast most. Every one is made to your size, and the pattern or profile can be changed to your drawing.
-
Corinthian
Two rows of acanthus leaves, corner volutes and a curved abacus with a rosette.
-
Ionic
Paired scroll volutes over an egg-and-dart band. Elegant on porticos.
-
Doric
A plain, rounded echinus under a square abacus. Strong and simple.
-
Lotus capital
An inverted lotus of carved petals, the Indian capital of temples and mandapams.
How capitals are made and fixed
-
Drawing or copy
We draw the capital to your column size, or model it from a photo or a sample of an existing one.
-
Master
A master is modelled with every leaf, volute or petal, and approved before moulding.
-
Mould and casting
A rubber mould captures the undercuts; capitals are cast in one or two pieces.
-
Fixing
Each capital is dowelled and grouted onto its column and the joint finished.

Questions about GRC capitals
Can you match capitals on an old building?
Usually. Send clear photos from the front and side with one measured dimension. For heritage buildings, check any approvals needed before replacing original elements.
Do capitals come with the column?
They can be ordered with our column shells or on their own for columns built by others.
Can capitals be painted gold or in colour?
Yes. Leaves and mouldings can be picked out in colour or gold, as temples and halls often do.
How many capitals can one mould make?
A whole run. One mould casts many identical capitals, which is why matching rows are economical in GRC.
