Questions and answers

What people in Chennai ask us most about GRC, about working with a unit in Bangalore, and about prices and timelines.

GRC and Chennai's climate

What is GRC?

GRC (glass fibre reinforced concrete) is a cement and fine-sand mix reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fibres instead of steel bars. The fibres run through the whole section, so GRC can be cast thin, light and detailed: jali, domes, columns and cornices that would be far heavier in concrete or stone.

Is GRC the same as GFRC?

Yes. GRC and GFRC are two names for glass fibre reinforced concrete. GRC is the usual name in India and the UK, GFRC in the US.

Is GRC suitable near the sea in Chennai?

Yes, and the coast is where it has the clearest advantage. Salt air corrodes the steel bars inside ordinary concrete, and the rust cracks the surface. GRC has no steel reinforcement to rust. Near the sea, we use stainless steel fixings to hold it to the building.

Will GRC hold up in the northeast monsoon?

GRC is a dense, cement-based material made for outdoor use. Unlike POP, it doesn't soften when wet. Good detailing matters as much as the material: cornices and sills get drip edges, tops are sloped, and joints are sealed.

How does GRC compare with POP, cement mouldings and stone?

POP is for interiors and fails outdoors in the rain. Cement mouldings run on site depend on the mason and tend to crack. Stone is heavy and slow to source and carve. GRC is light, cast to an exact profile, and made for outdoor use.

Is GRC fire-resistant?

GRC is a cement-based material and is non-combustible.

How heavy is GRC?

A typical GRC skin 12 to 15 mm thick weighs about 25 to 35 kg per square metre, against about 240 kg per square metre for a 100 mm precast concrete panel. Actual weights depend on the element and are confirmed for each project.

Working with a Bangalore unit

You're in Bangalore. How do you work on Chennai sites?

Most projects start on WhatsApp: you send drawings or photos, we send questions and a quotation that includes delivery to your site. Pieces are cast at our unit in Jakkur, Bangalore, about 350 km by road from Chennai, and trucked to site. Our team travels to fix them, or we supply your contractor.

Do you install in Chennai, or only supply?

Both. We can design, cast and install, or supply elements with fixing details for your own team.

Will someone visit our site?

For projects that need it, our team visits to measure, check fixing points and meet your architect or contractor. Tell us the site and the scope and we'll arrange it.

Can I see samples or visit the unit?

Yes. You're welcome at our unit in Jakkur, Bangalore; call or WhatsApp to arrange a visit. We can also send photos and video of moulds and of your pieces as they're made.

Do you work elsewhere in Tamil Nadu?

Yes: Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Vellore, Hosur and other cities, and Puducherry. Tell us where the site is and we'll confirm delivery and installation in the quotation.

Designs, prices and timelines

Do you only make catalogue designs?

No. Most of our work is custom. We make masters and moulds to your drawing, and we also have moulds for common profiles that can save time and cost.

What do you need from me for a quotation?

Drawings or photos of what you want, approximate sizes and quantities, the finish you have in mind, and the site location in Chennai or Tamil Nadu. WhatsApp is the quickest way to send them.

How much does GRC cost?

It depends on the element, its size, detail and finish, the quantity, and whether we install. Jali and cladding are usually priced per square foot, mouldings per running foot, and columns, domes and ornaments per piece. Delivery to Chennai is included in the quotation.

How long does a GRC project take?

Work that uses our existing moulds starts sooner; new designs need time for drawings and moulds first. We give you a schedule with the quotation, based on your design and quantities.

Care and maintenance

Does GRC need maintenance?

Very little. Occasional cleaning keeps it fresh, and painted or sealed finishes are renewed from time to time, as with any exterior surface. Near the sea, rinsing off salt deposits now and then helps any finish last.

Can GRC be painted?

Yes. GRC takes exterior emulsions, texture paints and clear sealers, including temple colours and metallic finishes. It can also be left in natural cement or coloured with integral pigments.

Do you repair GRC?

Yes. We inspect, repair, clean and repaint GRC elements, and can recast damaged pieces from the original moulds.
