GRC railings and balustrades

A railing is the whole balustrade: the base, the balusters or jali panels, the pedestal posts and the handrail. We supply all of it in GRC, so the pieces are designed to fit together.

Unlike mild-steel railings, a GRC railing has no exposed steel to rust and repaint, which matters within reach of the salt air on Chennai's coast.

Railings in Chennai and Tamil Nadu

  • Houses along ECR and in the southern coastal suburbs see steel railings rust quickly. A cement-based railing avoids that maintenance.
  • Terraces, staircases and garden edges on villas, and parapets on wedding halls and hotels, all use full balustrades.

Railing styles we make

Four of the styles we cast most. Every one is made to your size, and the pattern or profile can be changed to your drawing.

  • Baluster railing

Turned balusters between pedestal posts under a moulded handrail.

  • Jali railing

Star-pattern jali panels between posts: private, modern and breezy.

  • Staircase railing

A raked balustrade with a newel post at the foot.

  • Terrace parapet with urns

Pedestal posts topped with urn finials, for terraces and roof edges.

How railings are made and fixed

  1. Layout

We draw the run with posts at ends, corners and intervals, and the infill between them.

  2. Components

Bases, balusters or jali panels, posts, caps and handrails are cast from their moulds.

  3. Base and posts

On site, the base is fixed and the posts are set and fixed to the structure.

  4. Infill and handrail

Balusters or panels go in on dowels, the handrail is bedded on top, and the joints are finished.

Questions about GRC railings

Do GRC railings need painting?

They can be left in natural cement finish, coloured, or painted. A painted finish is renewed from time to time, as with any exterior wall.

Can a railing combine balusters and jali?

Yes. Jali panels between posts suit modern elevations; balusters suit classical ones. Some designs mix them.

Is a GRC railing safe for a terrace?

The balustrade is detailed for its height and use, with posts at intervals for stiffness. Tell us where it goes and we design it for that.

Can a railing follow a curved terrace?

Yes. Bases and handrails can be cast to a radius; send the curve with your drawing.
