GRC brackets and corbels

Brackets are what make an eave or a sunshade look supported. Indo-Saracenic buildings in Madras carry long rows of them under their chajjas, and Chettinad houses carve them in teak.

In GRC, a bracket keeps its scroll and leaf carving, matches every other bracket in the row, and doesn't rot, warp or attract termites in Chennai's humidity.

Brackets in Chennai and Tamil Nadu

  • Chajjas (sunshades) over windows are standard on Chennai buildings; brackets under them turn a plain slab into a feature.
  • Owners who want the look of carved wooden brackets on an outside wall use GRC instead, because it stands up to rain and humidity.

Bracket styles we make

Four of the styles we cast most. Every one is made to your size, and the pattern or profile can be changed to your drawing.

  • Scroll corbel

An S-scroll with volutes and an acanthus leaf, under eaves and balconies.

  • Chettinad-style bracket

A curved arm with a hanging lotus bud, after the carved teak brackets of Chettinad houses.

  • Chajja brackets

A row of small consoles under a window sunshade, the commonest bracket on Chennai buildings.

  • Stepped corbel

Stacked blocks projecting step by step. Clean and modern.

Design choices for brackets

Style
Classical scroll corbels, Indo-Saracenic brackets, Chettinad-style carved brackets, or plain modern profiles.
Size
From small sunshade brackets to large eave consoles.
Function
Most GRC brackets are decorative and fixed to a structural slab or beam. We'll say clearly when a bracket is decorative only.

How brackets are made and fixed

  1. Size and spacing

We set bracket size and spacing to the eave or sunshade, so the row looks right from the street.

  2. Master and mould

A master is modelled with its scrolls and carving, then moulded.

  3. Casting

Brackets are cast with fixing sockets, cured and finished.

  4. Fixing

Each bracket is anchored to the wall and the slab soffit, in line with the rest of the row.

Questions about GRC brackets

Do GRC brackets carry the chajja?

Usually not. The chajja or balcony is carried by its own structure; GRC brackets are fixed under it for the look. Your engineer decides what is structural.

Can you copy a carved wooden bracket?

Yes. Send photos with a measured dimension, or the bracket itself, and we model a GRC version for approval.

Can GRC brackets look like wood?

Yes. They can be finished in wood colours, giving the look of carved teak without rot or termites.

How far apart should chajja brackets be?

It depends on the sunshade's length and the look you want. We draw a spacing for your approval.
