GRC columns and pillars
Most GRC columns are not load-bearing. They are shells, cast in two halves, that close around your RCC column and turn a plain concrete post into a classical, Chettinad or Indo-Saracenic pillar.
GRC columns at a glance
- Sizes
- Height and diameter from your drawing; shells made to fit around your RCC column.
- Styles
- Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Chettinad-style tapered, square or Indo-Saracenic.
- Finishes
- White or grey cement, stone texture, or paint.
- Fixing
- Two half-shells close around the RCC column and are fixed and grouted; joints filled so they disappear.
- Priced by
- Per column (base, shaft and capital), by height and style.
- To quote, send us
- The RCC column size and height, the style you want, and how many columns.
Because the shell is the finish, the RCC work can be plain and quick, and the column arrives with its flutes, base and capital already crisp.
Columns in Chennai and Tamil Nadu
- Porticos of independent houses and villas from Anna Nagar to ECR use classical columns at the entrance and on the terrace.
- Kalyana mandapams and hotels line their halls and entrances with columns, often in long runs where every pillar has to match.
- Existing buildings can be updated without demolition: the shells wrap the columns already there.
Column styles we make
Four of the styles we cast most. Every one is made to your size, and the pattern or profile can be changed to your drawing.
-
Fluted Doric
A fluted shaft under a plain capital, the classic choice for porticos and verandahs.
-
Tuscan
A smooth shaft with a simple base and capital. Quiet and economical.
-
Corinthian
A fluted shaft topped with acanthus leaves and volutes, for grand entrances and halls.
-
Chettinad-style pillar
A tapering, faceted shaft on a lotus base with bracket arms at the top, after Chettinad mansions.
How columns are made and fixed
-
Measure the columns
We take the size and height of each RCC column; shells are made slightly larger to close around it.
-
Moulds for each part
Base, shaft halves and capital each have a mould; we use existing moulds where they fit.
-
Casting
Half-shells are cast with their flutes or facets, then cured and finished.
-
Closing the shells
On site, the two halves close around the RCC column and are fixed and grouted.
-
Base, capital and joints
Base and capital are set, and the vertical joints filled and finished so the column reads as one piece.

Questions about GRC columns
Can GRC columns carry load?
GRC column shells are decorative. The load is carried by the RCC or steel column inside, designed by your structural engineer.
Can you fit columns around existing pillars?
Yes. Send us the size of the existing column and the height. The shell is made slightly larger than the column and fixed around it.
Can GRC columns be used indoors?
Yes. Halls, lobbies and wedding halls often use them indoors, where finer finishes are possible.
What if my RCC columns are different sizes?
Tell us each size. Shells can be cast to suit, or the columns packed out to a common size before fixing.
